RMC never Consulted by Sports Organisers for Weather Conditions Prior to Matches: Ex-Director

GUWAHATI: A workshop called “Media Workshop on Weather and Climate Information” was organised by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati.

The said workshop was presided over by the DDGM RMC, Sanjay O’Neill Shaw along with ex-DDGMs Har Govinda Pathak and SN Deka.

Atul Singh, Scientist-C said that they could forecast rainfall accurately for 10 days in the short term and a long term general forecast of 60 days is also possible. Although these reports are uploaded regularly on their official portal, the government is not informed directly of the same.

When asked about the India-Sri Lanka match that was abandoned due to rains, the ex-Director of the organisation Har Govinda Pathak claimed that the organisers of the various games in the state should feel the need to contact the Indian Meteorological Department before finalising dates for the same. He claimed that the authorities responsible for organising the games including the upcoming Khelo India have never contracted the department. He said, “The authorities of the events should have an idea about the presence of RMC Guwahati. They should become clients of IMD Guwahati for us to update them on the weather conditions.”

He further stated, “We have forecast the weather based on the Centre located at LGBI Airport. However, the match locations including the venues of the upcoming Khelo India Games are 25 to 50 kms away. RMC has proposed the setting up of Automatic Weather Station (AWS) schemes every 10 kms, but the implementation was never made.”
