‘Rita’, India’s Oldest Chimpanzee Dies At Delhi Zoo

GUWAHATI: India’s oldest Chimpanzee, ‘Rita’ (59), died after suffering from multiple organ failure at the Delhi Zoo on Tuesday.

Rita was born at a zoo in Amsterdam and was acquired by the National Zoological Park Delhi in 1964.

According to the Zoo officials, Rita was not keeping well with her health and since July 27 she was on a liquid diet. Another official from the Zoo stated that she liked ‘Mazaa’ (a mango flavored drink) and they used to crush medicines mixed with different juices to feed her.

Average life-span of a chimpanzee is of around 40-50 years. She is the arguably the oldest Chimpanzee in Asia and her name is also lodged in the Limca Book of World Records.
