Two-wheeler riders often carry a second passenger for convenience, but in the process cause mishaps and accidents endangering all.

Talking to GPlus, a local from Hengrabari said, “I see these people carrying more than one passenger at times. This is extremely dangerous for anyone.”

“I also encountered an accident where the passenger going as ‘tripling’ met with an accident as he fell down from the two-wheeler,” he further added.

According to the Motor Vehicles Act, carrying more than one pillion rider on a two-wheeler is prohibited. Violations are subject to a fine of ₹1,000 for the first offense and ₹1,000 for subsequent offenses.

Talking to GPlus, a senior traffic police official said, “We try to fine the individuals whenever we encounter such cases. But, due to sheer volume of traffic, many such instances escape  us. However, we still try to keep an eye on such violations.”

Despite various regulations, instances of tripling remain prevalent in the city. Factors contributing to this include inadequate public transportation and a lack of awareness about traffic rules, along with ignorance.

Public are urged to comply with traffic regulations, not only to avoid fines but also to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the road.
