GUWAHATI: A suspected bike thief was shot and injured while allegedly attempting to escape police custody at Jorabat, near Guwahati, on Tuesday, February 4.

Basistha police had arrested three individuals in connection with a bike theft case. While being taken into custody, one of the suspects, identified as Dibyajyoti Saikia, also known as Babu, reportedly attacked a police officer in an attempt to flee. In response, officers opened fire, striking him in the leg.
Speaking to GPlus, an official from Basistha police station confirmed the incident. “During the transfer of custody, one of the arrested individuals attacked an officer and attempted to escape. Police had to resort to firing, resulting in a leg injury,” the official stated.
Dibyajyoti Saikia was apprehended and taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for medical treatment. Meanwhile, some police personnel also sustained minor injuries during the altercation.
Further investigation is underway to uncover any other connections related to the case.
