GUWAHATI: Guwahati is likely to have an international cricket match in 2022. The tentative dates revealed by the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) points to a match day in October 2022. However, the ACA is also contemplating an India vs Afghanistan match much earlier, at around March 2022.

This was revealed by ACA Secretary Devajit Lon Saikia at a press conference held in Barsapara Stadium on Sunday, December 19.

However, the main concern over the proposed cricket matches is the uncertainties that persist amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. "There is a loss if the matches get canceled. Currently, even in the English Premier League, they there are uncertainties about hosting matches," Saikia said.

Assam is set to get an International Cricket match on a pro-rata basis next year.

Saikia revealed that the main purpose of the ACA is not limited to getting International matches but "to develop Assam cricket." As such, a committee has been formed to look after the objective. "We (ACA) are into developing cricket at the grassroots level. The main objective is to clear the infrastructure shortage," added Saikia. The ACA says it has successfully restarted matches at the school, club, and office levels.
