A division bench comprising Chief Justice Vijay Bishnoi and Justice Kaushik Goswami was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning the issue of unqualified medical practitioners, or "quacks," operating in the state.
In response to a court directive, the Director of Health Services, Assam, filed an affidavit on March 7, outlining the measures taken in each district to identify and take action against quacks.

The Assam Council of Medical Registration has appointed Abhijit Neog as the Anti-Quackery & Vigilance Officer to oversee the state’s crackdown on fraudulent medical practitioners. Neog, currently serving as Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Arya Hospital, Guwahati, holds an MBBS degree and has over 20 years of medical experience. He has played a key role in exposing fake doctors in Assam.
Despite the affidavit detailing actions taken, the petitioner’s senior counsel expressed concerns about the slow pace of inspections conducted by the Anti-Quackery Units.

The Gauhati High Court has directed the State of Assam to submit an updated factual report on actions taken against quacks. Additionally, Neog has been instructed to file a report on the steps he has taken in his role as Anti-Quackery & Vigilance Officer. The PIL is scheduled for its next hearing in the third week of July.
