This data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) coincides with the city’s ongoing construction activities and dusty winds, which has exacerbated pollution levels. The maximum AQI crossed 350 in Pan Bazar, 343 in IIT Guwahati, 325 at the city’s airport, and 311 at Railway Colony.

Relatedly, Angul (Odisha) recorded the highest AQI at 269, followed by Badlapur (Maharashtra) at 239, while Nayagarh (Odisha) matched Guwahati at 230. All four cities fell under the ‘Poor’ category, indicating risks to public health, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.

Experts have suggested that the rise in the city’s pollution levels is primarily due to extensive construction work across the city, leading to the increasing suspension of dust particles in the air. Additionally, March’s seasonal dry winds have further worsened Guwahati’s air quality by carrying fine dust and particulate matter for extended periods of time.

Health professionals have advised the city’s residents to take precautions, including limiting outdoor activities, wearing masks, and staying hydrated, especially for individuals with existing respiratory ailments.

Better urban planning measures have also been suggested to address the deteriorating air levels of the city, such as systematic dust management and regular water sprinkling activities.
