Retired Engineer Killed for Rs 2000 in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: The city crime branch of Assam police arrested one in connection with the horrific murder case of a 72-year-old retired engineer in Dispur area of Guwahati.

According to reports, Police said that retired engineer Paresh Chandra Baruah was killed by his part-time domestic help just because the former did not pay him his due, which was around Rs 2,000.

The apprehended was identified as Ratan Das (20).

During introgation Das confessed that he killed Baruah in a fit of rage, after he was continuously denied his dues.

Earlier, The city crime branch of Assam police arrested one identified as Himangshu Barman from Udalguri. Himangshu was employed as a driver of the deceased Paresh Chandra Baruah.

On January 8, Paresh Chandra Baruah was hit with an iron rod which led to his death at his residence in Dispur.

Baruah was a retired engineer of Pollution Control Board, Assam. He is survived by his wife and two children who are working abroad.

Commissioner of Police Munna Prasad Gupta and DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta visited the deceased’s residence and the police are currently investigating the matter.

The incident took place on the night of January 7 when a group of miscreants broke into his house near Dispur Law College. Baruah was alone when the crime took place. His wife Dr. Gorima Saikia Baruah found his tied up body at around 10 pm.

ACP (Dispur) Himangshu Das said that the accused was produced before the court and was remanded for four days police custody .
