GUWAHATI: The residents of Beltola Survey, a bustling neighbourhood in Guwahati, Assam, have been facing ongoing issues with road construction delays, leading to frustration and inconvenience. The long-awaited project aimed at improving infrastructure and easing traffic congestion has left residents dissatisfied.
Akash Baishya, a resident of Ajanta Path, expressed his concerns, saying, “The road construction work has been going on for almost six months, causing numerous problems. The construction work has resulted in excessive dust and inadequate warning signs when the road is partially blocked. Additionally, during rainy days, the road gets flooded with water and mud, further aggravating the situation.”
Baishya also pointed out that several buildings are under construction along the road, leading to construction materials being stored openly, hindering commuters who have to take detours due to unexpected roadblocks.
A daily commuter of Beltola Survey expressed fatigue with the continuous road construction, mentioning the lack of proper streetlights on the road. This absence of adequate lighting creates a conducive environment for reckless driving and unwanted gatherings during nighttime, raising safety concerns.
A worker at Nayan Deep Medicos at Beltola said, “We have lost 70% of their customers due to the ongoing construction work. The road, which serves as a crucial link between Hatigaon and Beltola Survey, used to attract a significant number of customers, but the poor condition of the road has discouraged people from using it.”
Basanti Kalita, the councillor of Ward 41, urged residents to be patient regarding the construction work. She mentioned that addressing the streetlight issue and completing the construction work would require at least one week to ten days. Kalita suggested contacting the Public Works Department (PWD) to inquire about the delay, suggesting that the department might be facing funding issues.
Furthermore, Kalita highlighted the need for basic etiquette among residents, as many children and parents are not practicing cleanliness and are disposing of plastic packets and garbage indiscriminately. She emphasised the importance of educating residents about proper waste disposal and maintaining cleanliness.
