The incident occurred on March 25, when Mozumder was detained by Pan Bazar police after covering a dharna outside the Assam Cooperative Apex Bank Ltd. Protestors, along with Mozumder, had gathered to demand a high-level inquiry into alleged financial irregularities in the bank’s management and strict action against those responsible.
The journalist had further questioned the bank’s managing director about the alleged irregularities. However, according to the NHRC’s notice, no official reason was cited for his detention.
It further noted that if the media reports are accurate, the incident has raised concerns regarding the violation of the journalist’s human rights.
Therefore, the commission has sought a comprehensive report from the Assam Police regarding the circumstances leading to the journalist’s detention.
