GUWAHATI: Magh Bihu is fast approaching as Guwahati and Assam usher in 2025. Residents are now gearing up for the Bihu as they are procuring rice to be used in the festivities, be it Pitha, Jolpan, or Larus(laddus). However, a new issue has been highlighted which is rice adulteration in the city.

As per video reports on social media on New Year's Day, there has been suspicion of adulteration in the rice which had been bought under the NFSA act.

The video shows that the individual had kept the rice soaked in water overnight which led to some puffy rice-like substances came to light. These substances reportedly powder up when crushed by the fingers, looking like rice but not behaving like it. This has led to arising suspicions of adulteration in the rice grains with chemicals.

In this context, Speaking to GPlus, Anupam Gogoi, a Food Analyst at FSSAI said, “ The rice under the NFSA Act is mixed with nutrients to make it fortified rice kernels with a 90-10 grain-nutrient ratio. This has been done because the rice under this act is generally received by the underprivileged where women and children have iron and other nutritional deficiencies. This is not any chemical adulteration or such.”

Even though clarifications have been made, such claims need to be investigated and checked upon to see if there is any truth in it or it is just farce
