Ready-Made Mejis Set To Burn Hole In Pocket As Prices Surge Up To ₹2000 In Guwahati

GUWAHATI: As Magh Bihu approaches, the cost of ready-made mejis in Guwahati has increased this year. Vendors across areas like Kahilipara, Ganeshguri, and Khanapara are selling mejis at prices ranging from ₹700 to ₹2000, depending on their size.

Mejis, an essential part of Magh Bihu festivities, are traditionally built using bamboo and hay for the bonfire ritual. However, in urban areas, the demand for ready-made mejis has grown as many families find it more convenient to buy them instead of making their own.
Talking to GPlus, a vendor in Ganeshguri said, “Prices start at ₹700 for small ones, but the larger mejis go up to ₹2000. The rates are higher this time due to increased cost of raw materials.”

In Khanapara, the prices range between ₹700 and ₹1500, while in Kahilipara, smaller mejis are being sold for ₹1000, and the larger ones are priced at ₹2000. Local buyers have pointed out that prices have risen sharply compared to last year.

Talking to GPlus, a customer in Kahilipara said, “Last year, we bought a small meji for ₹200 to ₹500. This time, the rates are higher but we don’t have an option, as it’s difficult to make one ourselves in the city.”

Vendors attribute the rise in prices to several factors.

However, talking to GPlus, a vendor in Khanapara said, “The cost of bamboo and hay has gone up, and transportation charges are higher too. That is why we have had to increase the rates."

Despite the higher prices, many families are still buying mejis, eager to keep the spirit of Magh Bihu alive and feel the warmth of the festivity.
