Rare dolphin accidentally killed by bamboo raft near Guwahati

GUWAHATI: A fully-grown river dolphin was found dead with a broken jaw when some bamboo was being offloaded near the city.

The dolphin was handed over to officials of the Assam State Zoo who concluded that the mammal might have tried to capture small fish stuck in the bamboo raft and in the process, gotten its trunk entrapped.

It should be noted that these dolphins are a rare species, with only 267 surviving mammals left in the Brahmaputra river.

Each year, 10-15 of these dolphins are accidentally killed, and in addition to that, they are also murdered for meat and oil through poaching activities.
