Established in 1985 as a wildlife sanctuary the park was renamed as Rajiv Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary in 1992. There were a lot of protests during its renaming and the name was put on hold. It was finally declared a national park in 1999 and later came to be known as Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park.
