GUWAHATI: Multiple questions remain unanswered as investigations remain ongoing into a late-night accident that occurred in the city on Friday, October 1, leaving nine people including the accused driver of one of the two vehicles involved in the incident injured.
The accident occurred in the Khanapara-Rukminigaon area when a private vehicle rammed into an auto van, injuring 8 PWD labourers returning home from work. A case was lodged in this connection at the Dispur police station.
Curiously, the main accused in the case, identified as Rajkanya Baruah, managed to get bail in the case within 24 hours of the incident, a development that has caused uproar in social media circles. Meanwhile, there are unconfirmed reports that a re-investigation into the matter has been directed from the top levels of the State government. However, a senior official from the Dispur Police Station told G Plus they have received no such communication as yet.
Meanwhile, Rajkanya Baruah has denied allegations that she was drunk at the time of the incident. Talking to G Plus from the GNRC Hospital where she remains admitted for treatment of injuries received during the accident, she termed the allegations “completely baseless and fabricated”.
"It is the duty of the media to report but not to fabricate it," she said.
Baruah, who is currently out on bail, said she is being subjected to a “media trial” and was severely depressed as a result of it. Reports indicate she was returning from a popular 5-star hotel at the time of the accident.
Dispur police have told G Plus that the investigation into the accident remains ongoing, and police are yet to access a report on the blood-alcohol levels of Baruah at the time of the accident.
