Private Bus Services Affected In Guwahati Due To 48-Hour Strike

GUWAHATI: Guwahati residents are facing disruptions availing private bus services following the announcement of a 48-hour strike by the Joint Platform Of Motor Sramik Union of Assam on January 5 and 6, 2024.

While ASTC buses continue their usual routes, private city bus services are expected to bear the brunt of the strike. The strike is a collective expression of discontent against the "Hit and Run" law, a component of the "National Vehicle and Traffic Act," enacted by the central government in 2014.

Talking to GPlus, a bus association official stated, "Most drivers are participating in the strike. While we endorse the strike, some bus owners have chosen not to participate. Therefore, if certain drivers continue to operate, it's their individual decision."

The recent amendment to the law, colloquially known as the "Hit and Run" law, holds drivers accountable for penalties up to ₹7 lakh or imprisonment for up to 10 years. The strike has disrupted the regular flow of private bus services, inconveniencing many daily commuters in the city.

Talking to GPlus, Riya Das, a resident of Beltola, said "I was on my way to work when I noticed no buses. Concerned about the evening commute, I had to take leave and return home."

While the majority of drivers support the strike, a portion of bus owners have opted out, allowing individual drivers to make their own choices regarding participation. Consequently, private city bus services are likely to experience interruptions, adding to the challenges faced by daily commuters.
