GUWAHATI: The residence of Congress spokesperson Reetam Singh in Guwahati’s Rupnagar was raided and he was arrested by Lakhimpur police on Saturday, March 15. The raid followed a case registered at Lakhimpur police station, reportedly linked to a comment made on social media concerning an MLA’s family.

Singh alleged that he had not been informed about the case prior to the raid. He also claimed that the Lakhimpur police did not provide any justification for the action and accused the authorities of engaging in a political conspiracy. The Congress spokesperson was inside his house at the time of the raid.
Congress leader Debabrata Saikia condemned the police action, stating that Ritam Singh had recently exposed misinformation propagated by the government. Saikia suggested that the government was particularly embarrassed by Singh’s statements regarding satellite-related issues and that the administration was irked by the fact that he had shared his views in English rather than Assamese.
Saikia further pointed out that the Guwahati High Court had recently directed the Assam police to adhere to all legal norms while arresting individuals. However, he accused the authorities of attempting to suppress Singh’s right to free speech by targeting him for his statements.
Assam MP Gaurav Gogoi took to his X, saying, “A team of Lakhimpur police have come to Guwahati to take custody of Congress spokesperson @SinghReetam. When I went to his residence I saw how he was brutally dragged away and was not allowed to speak to me.”
