GUWAHATI: The Town and Country Planning department has launched a one-month "test" to assess the feasibility of redesigning Paltan Bazar, a bustling commercial hub in the city.

While the newly introduced colourful stretch adds a fresh aesthetic appeal, it has also sparked frustration among commuters and pedestrians due to traffic disruptions.
The initiative follows a similar experiment at Ganeshguri, where a traffic island was created under the flyover. The latest redesign includes a traffic island in Nepali Mandir area and barricading key areas with cones to prevent unauthorised parking which often contributes to congestion.
Speaking to GPlus, a source in the department said, “These colourful stretches are being tested for a month to evaluate whether Paltan Bazar can be planned in a more systematic manner, ensuring smoother traffic movement.”
However, the initiative faced backlash on Thursday morning as road space was significantly reduced due to the ongoing redesign, causing inconvenience for daily commuters. While the department aims to streamline traffic, concerns remain about the immediate impact on the city's busiest commercial artery.
The results of the survey will determine whether these experimental changes will be implemented permanently or require further modifications.
