Activists of Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress staged a protest against the price rise of vegetables and cooking gas and other essential commodities, by wearing garlands of Potatoes and Onions in front of Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati on Tuesday.

Despite the best efforts of the administration, the onion crisis in the city has resulted in soaring prices and has hit the residents hard. Though the price of onions has been fixed at Rs 40 per kilogram in the retail market by the administration, they are being sold at Rs 50 per kilogram or even more in the city.

The Kamrup (Metro) District Administration has set up teams comprising Additional Deputy Commissioners and other officials to check the price of onions, their efforts have been largely futile. The prices which have been soaring for the last few weeks are hurting the local residents who have complained that the prices have never matched the rate fixed by the administration.
