Preventive Policing A Priority For Assam Police, Says, Diganta Barah

GUWAHATI: Diganta Barah held his first Press meet at the Commissioner of Police office in Panbazar, Guwahati, today, Wednesday, December 21, 2022, after taking over as the newly appointed Commissioner of Police in Guwahati. The Guwahati Joint Police Commissioner also attended the meeting.

Addressing the media, Diganta Barah, the commissioner of police in Guwahati, stated that since last week, a total of 5 chain-snatching instances have been reported from within and around the city.

According to the new police commissioner, "a total of four people  were picked up by the city police, and four more were detained separately in connection with these incidents"

In an attempt to allay public fears and worries, Barah noted that there had been one or two more chain-snatching occurrences reported in and around Guwahati compared to past figures, but he exuded confidence that the police will be able to stop such incidents from occurring in the city.

“Even if one looks at the series of Car theft incidents in Guwahati then there hasn’t been too much of a spurt of these incidents compared to earlier.”Diganta Barah stated in a statement to the media. According to him, a total of 15 to 17 car theft incidents have been reported in Guwahati, of which the police have recovered 7 vehicles and made 13 arrests so far. It has also occasionally been observed that miscreants and criminals try to employ new methods of operation in order to carry out their crimes and avoid detection by the authorities. The Police will work together to stay one step ahead of the curve and thwart their efforts.

Diganta Barah responded to a media query about the fact that these chain-snatching criminals have robbed their victims at gunpoint while carrying firearms, by saying that the Police will attempt to identify the criminals who carry the weapons and with the aid of a thorough investigation will discover the source from which these criminals have obtained these illegal firearms.

When asked about effective night patrolling, the Commissioner of Police responded that he and the Joint Commissioner of Police and district superintendent of Police had already identified pockets and areas around Guwahati where there might be a chance that crime was occurring and had made sure that police were in charge of the city at night.

He claimed that throughout the previous four days, the city police team had discussed ways to improve night patrols in coordination with the field police troops. He explained that 112 has replaced dial 100 as the emergency number for the entire state and can be called even if there is a fire incident that is being reported in or near the state or city.

He claimed that the police in and around the city will utilise the maximum of their resources and make the best possible use of their force.

A Special Investigation Team has been established by the Police Headquarters in Guwahati to look into the murder of Ranjit Borah, a distributor of Purabi Diary in the Panjabari neighbourhood of Guwahati. The SIT will be guided into the investigations by an officer of the SP rank.

Speaking to G Plus, Diganta Barah stated that "our priorities in Guwahati will be preventive policing for the occurrence of crime and to take steps when a crime occurs and to ensure that justice is done to the victim by following the established legal procedure and also to ensure legal punishment to culprits through the criminal justice system."

Speaking to G Plus regarding  December 25, the new Commissioner of Police discussed traffic arrangements for the holiday season and the upcoming Christmas. He stated that "traffic teams will be deployed in Guwahati to stop youth from engaging in various stunt driving with their vehicles in addition to stopping them from engaging in drunk driving."
