The new guideline along with other policies is expected to drive up the prices. This will allow the sellers to sell pork which is exclusively sourced and slaughtered only from government-authorised slaughterhouses.
Talking to the media, a local pork seller said,” See, after this step, the prices per kg cannot be less than ₹800 because the profit margin from a pig is only about ₹1000 or even less. Besides, there are costs like transportation and storage that have to be taken into consideration.” The current price per kilo ranges from ₹450 to ₹500.
Many residents and officials have raised eyebrows and questions over the pitiable condition of pork rearing and selling in multiple places in Guwahati.
Talking to the media, a veterinarian from GMC said, “This measure has been taken according to the law and keeping in mind the scientific process. Some examinations will be done post the slaughter after which it can be deemed fit for sale.”
This measure has been undertaken due to the haphazard sale of pork in the city leading to various diseases amongst the sellers and consumers alike. This will eventually be done for the sale of mutton and chicken also.
