GUWAHATI: Guwahati residents are cautioned against a rising scam involving fraudulent messages from people claiming to be from the electricity company. The messages threaten disconnection unless pending bills are paid through a provided payment link or phone number.
Taking to X, a concerned user shared a picture, labelling them as "APDCL spammers" and urged vigilance to protect innocent consumers. The method how scammers obtain customers' mobile numbers remains a significant concern.

However, talking to GPlus, a senior official from APDCL stated, "the scam began a year ago. The modus operandi involves a pop-up appearing when users access the APDCL website. To address the problem, we have initaited awareness campaigns to alert consumers to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of messages."
Speaking to GPlus, a senior official from Crime Branch stated, "People are advised to take immediate action upon receiving false information or messages related to electricity bill payments.”
He also emphasised the importance of contacting the designated helpline number, 1930, to report such incidents.
