GUWAHATI: Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her budget speech announced that Income Tax Returns (ITR) can be filed by simply quoting Aadhaar number, hence PAN card will not be necessary from now onwards.

Sitharaman has announced interchangeability of PAN and Aadhaar card for the ease and convenience of the tax-payers.

The Finance Minister also said that Aadhaar card for NRIs with Indian passports will be issued after their arrival in India, without waiting for the mandatory 180 days.

In February this year, the Supreme Court had made Aadhaar mandatory for filing of ITR and allotment of PAN.

Sitharaman presented the Modi 2.0 government’s maiden budget where she held a red parcel like bag with a key hole on the emblem, breaking away from the tradition of using a briefcase.
