Oliver Kahn’s academy to set up a training centre in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: German footballer Oliver Kahn’s academy, Goalplay, has expressed its wish to set up a centre of excellence for goalkeeping in Guwahati.

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Goalplay, Moritz Mattes, on Tuesday, July 23 met Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and expressed the academy’s desire to set up the centre, which is a training academy for optimising goalkeepers' performance.

Mattes stated that as part of its expansion plans, Goalplay will set up four centres in India, one each in the east, west, north and south of India.

“Guwahati will be the venue for our centre of excellence in the eastern region,” Moritz told the Chief Minister during the meeting and informed that with the help of the sports department, Goalplay will handpick two potential young goalkeepers from the state to be sent to its centre in Munich for advanced training in September of this year.

Sonowal thanked Kahn for choosing Guwahati as one of the venues and assured Mattes that the government will help in every way possible to set up the centre.
