Nirbhaya Case: Delhi Court to hear Plea on Fresh Death Warrants Today

GUWAHATI: The Patiala House Court will hear a plea seeking the issuance of a new death warrant against the four convicted in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape case today at 2 PM.

A Delhi court had adjourned till 2 PM for February 17 the hearing on the plea of the state and Nirbhaya’s parents seeking issuance of death warrant as a petition challenging the rejection of mercy plea of convict Vijay Kumar Sharma is pending before the Supreme Court.

The Patiala House court had observed that Article 21 of the constitution protects the life and liberty of the convicts till the last breath of life.

On the other hand, the mother of the victim said that she was hopeful of a positive outcome from the court at the hearing on her petition for fresh death warrants.      

“Several dates (of court hearing) have come and gone but fresh death warrants haven’t been issued yet. But we go with new hope in every hearing. Their lawyers use new tactics everyday, I can’t say what will happen today but I’m hopeful,” said Asha Devi as per media reports.

The horrific gang rape case which took place in the national capital on December 12, 2012 shook the nation and triggered nation-wide protests.      

The hanging of the four convicts was supposed to take place on February 1, 2020, however, this has been deferred by the Delhi court indefinitely.
