GUWAHATI: Vinay Sharma, one of the death row convicts of the Nirbhaya gang-rape case, was reportedly injured after he banged his head against a wall in his cell, in an attempt to hurt himself.
As per reports, Sharma was injured on February 16 after trying to hurt himself inside his cell. However, he was stopped by the jail authorities and was treated for minor injuries.
Earlier, Sharma’s lawyer had mentioned that Vinay was on a hunger strike inside the jail and that he was suffering from mental illness and thus death sentence could not be carried out against him.
After which the court had directed the jail authorities to ensure appropriate care of Vinay as per law.
It is to be mentioned that the Patiala House Court had set March 3 as the date of execution for all the four convicts of the Nirbhaya gang-rape case. The new date of execution was issued by the Patiala House Court on Monday, February 17.
This is the third time that the death warrant has been issued to the convicts since the previous dates were deferred due to the convicts seeking legal remedies available to them.
Commenting on the verdict, the victim’s mother Asha Devi said, “I am satisfied with the verdict, finally we have another date. I Hope they will be hanged this time.”
