This was announced by Assam Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary on social media platform X. “A new member comes to our Kaziranga Family today!” The minister said, while posting a photo of the calf.

The newborn, named Gauri, is the offspring of an elephant named Phulmai, who resides within the protected area of Kaziranga.

Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to a significant population of elephants, along with other iconic species like the one-horned rhinoceros, tigers, and wild buffaloes. The birth of Gauri has been considered as a positive sign for elephant conservation efforts in Assam, where habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict remains two challenges.

The authorities at Kaziranga National Park are monitoring both Phulmai and her newborn to ensure their well-being.
