NBAGR registers two new livestock breeds from Assam

GUWAHATI: The NGABR (National Bureau of Animal Genetics Resources) registered two new livestock breeds from Assam as distinct breeds of the country. 

The NGABR, which comes under the ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) added the swamp buffalo and the local goats of Assam to the list on December 14 of this year. 

The Union Agriculture Minister, Radha Mohan Singh, along with Agriculture Ministers of State, Gajendra Singh Sekhawat, Krishna Raj and Purusuttam Rupala handed the registration certificates.

The local goats of Assam were registered as ‘Assam Hill goat,’ which is the 14th addition to the list and the swamp buffaloes were registered as ‘Luit’ the 31st registered breed. 

In addition to these two species, seven different breeds from Assam have been registered as distinct breeds by the NGABR which includes animals like the Doom pig, Lakhimi cattle, Pati duck, Miri bird, and Daothirgir chicken.
