GUWAHATI: Drilling of a 420-feet deep borewell at the residence of Shankar Kumar in Khatkhati, Karbi Anglong, triggered a sudden eruption of unidentified material on Thursday, May 1.
According to sources, the composition and origin of the material remain unidentified, raising immediate safety concerns. The residual mud from the site has been dispatched to the ONGC Laboratory in Dehradun for analysis to determine its composition and detect any possible presence of trapped gases. A team from the Geological Survey of India is expected to visit the site on Friday, May 2.
Following the incident, the Additional District Magistrate in charge of Bokajan Sub-Division issued a formal order restricting all movement of people and vehicles within a 200-metre radius of the site. The directive, which took effect immediately, will remain in force until laboratory analysis is completed and a geological inspection is carried out.
“In view of eruption of unidentified material at a borewell site at the residence of Shankar Kumar, near CRPF Group Centre, Khatkhati; all movements of man and material is hereby strictly restricted within a radial distance of 200 mts from the site of eruption till the receipt of the final analysis report of the Residual Mud, for presence of any entrapped gases from the ONGC-Dehradun Laboratory and also until the visit of expert team from the Geological Survey of India. This order comes into force with immediate effect,” the official order stated.
Authorities have urged residents to comply with the restriction and avoid the area until further instructions are issued.
