Virtually Zero Attendance in most Government offices for Assam Bandh

GUWAHATI: In a state-wide Assam bandh called by the AASU and supported by several other organizations, daily life was hit hard as several private and government institutions, business houses, schools and colleges remained closed.

G Plus visited several government establishments in the city to find out the turn out of the employees. However, no officials had arrived till about 12:00 PM in the afternoon.“If they reach the office, then the office will start functioning,” said a source to G Plus.

Ironically, the High Court in 2013 had banned bandhs in the state and termed it "unconstitutional and illegal". Last year in October another massive bandh was called to protest against the Centre’s bid to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, in the winter session of Parliament.

However a senior BJP Minister in that regard said, "We have to follow the court's order and ensure that there is no bandh," It was also mandated that "all shops and business establishments should remain open while government employees must report for their duties or else it will be treated as a contempt of court."
