MLA Proposes Master Plan To Revive Guwahati's Bharalu And Mora Bharalu Rivers

GUWAHATI: Addressing the worsening condition of the Bharalu and Mora Bharalu rivers, West Guwahati MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita has put forward a comprehensive master plan to tackle the alarming accumulation of waste in these vital water bodies. Speaking during the budget session on Tuesday, March 4, Kalita highlighted the dire state of Guwahati’s three major rivers—Bahini, Bharalu, and Mora Bharalu—stating that indiscriminate dumping has turned them into open drains.

According to a survey by the Pollution Control Board, Bharalu and Mora Bharalu rank among the most polluted rivers in the country. While the Public Works Department (PWD) carries out periodic surface-level cleaning, Kalita pointed out that deep-seated pollution remains unaddressed, posing serious health risks to residents.

To ensure a more effective approach, Kalita recommended transferring the responsibility of river cleanup from the PWD to the Water Resources Department. He also stressed the need for a dedicated water and sewage treatment system to facilitate proper filtration and maintenance of the rivers.

As part of his proposal, Kalita suggested installing light posts and CCTV cameras along the riverbanks to monitor and identify individuals illegally dumping waste. He further urged the government to impose strict fines and punitive measures against offenders to curb pollution.

Kalita’s recommendations aim to implement a structured and long-term solution to protect Guwahati’s waterways and safeguard public health. Whether the government will act on these proposals remains to be seen.
