Miscreants Kill Wild Boar that Strayed Out of Pobitora, Sell Meat

GUWAHATI: With the city wide lockdown in place and the seasonal floods driving the animals out of their protected habitats at the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, miscreants killed a wild boar and four male hornbills.

Reportedly, the birds were killed at Biharibasti village near Hatibagora. The meat of the wild boar was also sold to customers.

Moloy Baruah, president of the NGO Early Birds had filed an FIR with the Chandrapur Police Station and four miscreants have been identified. However, they have not yet been arrested due to the prevailing Covid crisis.

Baruah, speaking to media said, "It is a vicious circle of poachers who had killed the wild boar and probably sold it to prefixed customers from the locality the same night. Photographs of the boar have been collected and submitted to the state DGP by one of our members."

It needs to be mentioned that this is the nesting season of the hornbills. Experts claim that it is easy to kill a male hornbill during this period as they are engaged in procuring food for the females as the latter remains in sealed nests.
