GUWAHATI: Assam Minister Ashok Singhal on Thursday, March 6 dismissed allegations that he made negative remarks about the revered cultural tradition of Bhaona, calling the claims completely baseless. He asserted that certain media outlets had misrepresented his statements, leading to misconceptions among the public.

Singhal stated that there was no question of him making such remarks and emphasised that he never intended to spark unnecessary debate. He acknowledged that the controversy may have hurt sentiments and extended an apology to those affected. "If my words have hurt anyone’s feelings, I sincerely apologise," he said.

The controversy arose after reports suggested that Singhal had questioned the Guwahati Press Club’s decision to organise a Bhaona performance, reportedly stating, "Why should the Press Club organise a Bhaona? Bhaona is not secular." The Guwahati Press Club criticised the alleged statement, calling it disrespectful and disappointing. The club highlighted that Bhaona is an integral part of Assam’s cultural heritage and should not be viewed through a narrow lens, urging the minister to issue a clarification.

Denying the allegations, Singhal earlier on March 4, described them as "completely false and baseless." He also condemned what he termed an "insult to public sentiments" through the spread of misinformation.

Meanwhile, Guwahati Club is organising a Bhaona performance, inviting people from all walks of life, including political and non-political groups, to attend.
