Mid-Day Meals Across Assam To Provide Three Eggs Per Week To Students

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government, during the State Cabinet Meeting, held yesterday, approved the provision of three eggs per week as part of the mid-day meal program for schools located in char or chapori areas.

This initiative, under the PM-POSHAN scheme, is scheduled to be implemented from December 1, 2023.

This decision acknowledges the role of nutrition in the growth and development of schoolchildren, particularly those in char and chapori areas. By offering three eggs per week, a decision has been made to include an additional source of high-quality protein and essential nutrients to promote healthy development among students.

Char Chapori is an area of Brahmaputra river and its tributaries in the Indian state Assam constitution of flood plain sediments. They are generally floating islands while chaporis are low-lying flood-prone riverbanks. According to the Assam Government record, the Char Chapori covers 3,608 km2 of the Brahmaputra basin or 4.6% of Assam's area.
