MC Mary Kom Becomes First Woman Athlete To Be Recommended For Padma Vibhushan

GUWAHATI: Adding another feather to her cap, MC Mary Kom, ace boxer from Manipur has been recommended for the prestigious Padma Vibhushan award by the sports ministry.

Notably, Mary Kom is the first woman athlete whose name has been put forward by the ministry for the country’s second-highest civilian honour after the Bharat Ratna.

It is to be mentioned that Mary Kom has already been honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2013 and Padma Shri in 2006 for her accomplishments in the world of boxing.

On the other hand, PV Sindhu, who became the first Indian to win the world championship in August this year, has been recommended for the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award in the country.

The other seven women in this year’s list who have been recommended for the Padma Shri include – champion wrestler Vinesh Phogat, table tennis star Manika Batra, cricket captain Harmanpreet Kaur (T20Is), hockey captain Rani Rampal, former shooter Suma Shirur and mountaineer twin sisters, Tashi and Nungshi Malik.
