Many New Areas In Guwahati Face Waterlogging Issues This Year

GUWAHATI: Several new areas of Guwahati have started facing severe waterlogging issues following continuous rainfall on the night of July 4.

The incessant downpour has caused flooding in multiple parts of the city, including Barsapara, Bhetapara, Jyotikuchi, Kalapahar, Bhaskar Nagar, and some areas of Kahilipara.

A 78-year-old resident of Barsapara said, "Never in my life did I thought that this area will be under water. I have spent my life here, but because of this and that construction and the re-construction of flyover for God knows what reason, the water is unable to move."

Another resident of Bhaskar Nagar said, "Yesterday was the first time that we saw waterlogging here. I don't have any idea why, nor does the other residents do. And it's scary."

The relentless rains have led to flash floods and widespread traffic chaos. Even on the following day, Friday, many areas remained waterlogged, paralysing daily life in the city. Streets turned into rivers, and vehicles were left stranded as residents navigated the deluge.

Rajgarh, one of the worst affected areas in Guwahati, is still submerged under water. The situation in Rajgarh has prompted the Guwahati Police to issue traffic restrictions for Rajgarh Road. As of July 5, the entry of any vehicles into Rajgarh has been strictly prohibited to ensure public safety and facilitate rescue operations.
