The case of human trafficking came to light on June 29 after a complaint was filed at Bhangagarh Police Station alleging that an 18-year-old girl had gone missing after a dispute over a mobile phone purchase in the family.

During the probe, it was discovered that the missing girl, along with another girl, had been enticed under false pretenses by people promising assistance to travel to Delhi but instead they were handed over to alleged human traffickers.

The girls were transported to Siliguri and eventually sold to a brothel in Rawta, Bihar, for a sum of ₹1,10,000, as per sources.

The police made a breakthrough when a ransom call for ₹30,000 was traced to Purnia, Bihar, leading to the apprehension of one Tanveer Alom from whose custody the victims were recovered.

Further investigation led to the arrest of Idrish Ali and Sikandar Ali from Guwahati.

Another woman Khairun Nessa, from West Bengal, was also arrested for her involvement in the trafficking ring.

All four suspects have been remanded to police custody after being produced before a judicial magistrate.
