Many Government Schools In Guwahati Still Not Equipped With Sanitary Pad Vending Machines

GUWAHATI: Despite the Assam government's progressive plan to mandate sanitary pads for girl students in all schools, there is a notable gap in implementation evident in several government schools across Guwahati. The proposal, which has gained acceptance from the Central government, is awaiting final approval expected by the end of May or June.

Axom Samagra Shiksha, an integral education program, has initiated efforts to install approximately 5,000 vending machines and incinerators in schools throughout Guwahati, aiming to facilitate easy access to sanitary pads for girls. This move is a significant step toward addressing the challenges faced by many girls and women in Assam regarding menstrual hygiene product accessibility.

Earlier, an official from Axom Samagra Shiksha highlighted the government's commitment to creating a healthier environment for its girl students, emphasizing that the provision of menstrual hygiene products is a crucial aspect of ensuring their well-being and dignity.

While the state government is optimistic about the proposal's finalisation by May or June, ongoing challenges persist. The awareness of the importance of accessible menstrual products remains crucial for citizens in Assam to understand the significance of gender parity and improved gender-specific health outcomes.

However, ground reports reveal discrepancies in the implementation of these initiatives.

Speaking to GPlus, an official from TC Govt school mentioned that although two vending machines were provided by an NGO, both are currently non-functional. Similarly, a senior teacher in Panbazar reported having two vending machines given a year ago.

Adding to the challenges, an official from Ulubari Higher Secondary School told GPlus, "We have only one sanitary pad vending machine, which is not enough for the students. With the construction of a new four-floor building, one vending machine falls short. We will need at least four sanitary pad vending machines for each floor."

However, speaking to GPlus, Dipika Choudhury, Inspector of Schools stated, "It will be distributed soon."
