GUWAHATI: The northeastern state of Manipur is planning to legalise medicinal marijuana soon.

It should be noted that Manipur is known to have some of the highest quality weed in the country.

Based on a report by Vice India, the Manipuri government is likely to legalise marijuana for medical and industrial purposes.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh at a press conference on Saturday, September 21 stated that the government is seriously considering this move as it will help in boosting the state’s revenue.

He added that since “cannabis grows in the wild abundantly” in the state, they can use it for the extraction of hemp oil which is known for its medicinal property.

In addition, weed can also be used for hemp, which is a sustainable byproduct that can be used to make cloth and paper.

Further, he stated that this issue will be discussed at the next meeting of the state Cabinet.

It is to be mentioned that other states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand have already legalised marijuana for medicinal purposes.

However, it is important to note that the recreational use of cannabis and its cultivation continues to be banned in India under the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985.
