GUWAHATI: Senior Congress leader, Ripun Bora has criticised the Assam government's decision to close the state-run Madrassas and Sankrit Tols. He claimed that the move is against the secular ethos of the Constitution. "All religions have the right for education. The abolition of Madrassas and Sanskrit Tols is against secularism and is a violation of fundamental rights. The Constitution has given everyone equal rights," Bora told G Plus.
The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president further justified the role of Madrassas and refuted the tag that it is 'foreign education'.
Earlier, the state Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "In my opinion, teaching 'Quran' can't happen at the cost of government money. If we have to do so then we should also teach both the Bible and Bhagavad Gita. So, we want to bring uniformity and stop this practice."
Bora called out the BJP government's stand on uniformity. "If they don't sponsor any religion, why did they sponsor the Ram Mandir with crores of money? Why are they naming colleges after Deendayal Upadhyaya?" asked Bora.
