LS Elections 2024: Voter Turnout More In NE Than Majority States In India

GUWAHATI: The voter turnout in the majority of the Northeastern states has been recorded to be higher in comparison to the rest of the states participating in the first phase of Lok Sabha Elections on April 19.

As of 3 PM on Friday, the voter turnout was 60.70% in Assam, 62.58% in Manipur, 61.95% in Meghalaya, and 68.35% in Tripura as compared to the 53.40% in Madhya Pradesh, 44.12% in Maharashtra, and 50.80% in Tamil Nadu which are effectively bigger states.

Uttar Pradesh has also recorded a voter turnout of 47.44%, as of 3 PM on Friday, which is lower than expected. Bihar has seen a significantly low voter turnout of 39.73%.

The Lok Sabha election 2024's first phase covers 102 constituencies across 21 states and union territories (UTs), with full coverage in 10 states and UTs and partial coverage in 11 others.

This phase commenced today in various states, including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Uttarakhand, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, as well as parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Tripura, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Manipur, Assam, and Bihar.

During this phase, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh will also conduct elections to select their respective assemblies.

Subsequent phases of voting are scheduled for April 26, May 7, May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1.
