The development comes hours after Chief Minister Biren Singh resigned along with his council of ministers.
The order read: "In exercise of powers conferred by Clause (1) of Article 174 of the Constitution of India, I, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Governor of Manipur, hereby order that the previous Orders dated 24 January 2025 to summon the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly’s 7th Session, which is yet to commence, is hereby declared 'null and void' with immediate effect."
Earlier, Singh submitted his resignation to the governor at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal. He was accompanied by several ministers, MLAs, and the BJP state president. The governor accepted the resignation of the chief minister and the council of ministers while requesting him to continue in office as caretaker chief minister until alternative arrangements are made.
A press release stated: "Governor accepted the resignation of the Chief Minister along with Council of Ministers and asked him to continue in office till alternative arrangements are made."
In his resignation letter, Singh expressed gratitude to the central government for its support in safeguarding Manipur’s interests.
He also urged continued attention to key issues, including maintaining the state’s territorial integrity, preventing border infiltration, and formulating a policy for deporting illegal immigrants.
Notably, Manipur has been embroiled in ethnic conflict for nearly two years, leading to over 250 reported deaths and thousands of people being displaced.
