Meghalaya To Host 39th National Games In 2027

GUWAHATI: Meghalaya has been officially confirmed as the host of the 39th National Games in 2027 by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the central government. This was confirmed by the state’s Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Shakliar Warjri on Monday, February 10.

“This is great news for the youth and sports lovers of our state,” Warjri revealed in a video statement. “We hope our athletes use this platform to work hard and bring medals for Meghalaya.”

An initial contract was signed back in 2018 with the IOA to host the Games in 2022, under the then Chief Minister Mukul Sangma. However, delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and scheduling issues in other states led to the eventual postponement. The state is now preparing to hold the event in two years' time.

Current Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had last month briefed the IOA on Meghalaya’s readiness to host the event. Over the past four years, the state has committed to investing significantly in sports infrastructure, including upgrades to JN Sports Complex in Shillong, Wahiajer Stadium in West Jaintia Hills, and PA Sangma Integrated Sports Complex in Tura.

Shillong has also previously hosted major sporting events, including the 2016 South Asian Games, the 2022 North East Games, and the Meghalaya Games in multiple locations.
