Manipur CM N Biren Singh Resigns, Urges Centre To Uphold State’s Integrity

GUWAHATI: Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh, who headed the BJP government in the state, submitted his resignation, marking the end of his tenure, on Sunday, February 9. In his resignation letter, Singh expressed gratitude to the Central government for its support in safeguarding Manipur’s interests.

He highlighted key concerns that require continued attention, urging the Centre to maintain the territorial integrity of Manipur, curb border infiltration, and formulate a policy for deporting illegal immigrants.

He also emphasised the importance of sustaining the fight against drugs and narco-terrorism, along with ensuring the strict implementation of biometric-based border monitoring under the Free Movement Regime (FMR). Singh further called for expediting border infrastructure projects currently underway.

Singh stated that it had been an honour to serve the people of Manipur and expressed hope that the Central government would continue its commitment to the state’s development and security.

However, the governor has asked Singh to continue as caretaker chief minister until alternative arrangements are made.

The resignation comes a day ahead of the start of the budget session of the state assembly when the Opposition Congress was reportedly preparing to move a no-confidence motion against the government. Reports also indicated a growing grievance against the chief minister among a section of the ruling BJP MLAs.

Manipur has been on the boil for almost two years as an ethnic conflict gripped the state. Over 250 people are reported to have died while thousands were rendered homeless in the conflict.
