Lovlina Borgohain Becomes First Woman Boxer From Assam To Qualify For Olympics

GUWAHATI: Lovlina Borgohain becomes the first woman boxer from Assam to qualify for the Olympics and second from the state to represent India after Shiva Thapa. She is from the Golaghat district of Assam.

Lovlina secured a berth for the Tokyo Olympics 2020 with a bronze-medal finish in the 2020 Asia & Oceania Boxing Olympic qualifiers. Borgohain defeated Maftunakhon Melieva of Uzbekistan 5-0 in the women's welterweight (69 kg category) in the quarterfinals to become the first female athlete from Assam to qualify for the quadrennial event.

Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the athlete on Twitter. He wrote, "A matter of great joy and pride for us as @LovlinaBorgohai becomes the first woman pugilist from Assam to qualify for the #Olympics. My heartiest congratulations to you Lovlina. You have our finest wishes for the big moment. May you continue to shine and succeed."

Lovlina was born on October 2, 1997 and is a two-time World Championships bronze medallist. She recently won bronze in the 69 kg category at the Asian Boxing Championship held in Dubai.
