GUWAHATI: The National Highway 27 in Guwahati was swarmed with vehicles as the annual Rasleela Utsav unfolded on Sunday in the Lokhra area causing a massive gridlock. What was anticipated to be a weekend of leisure for commuters turned into a chaotic ordeal, leaving many stranded and frustrated.
There was an unexpected turn as the festivities of the Rasleela Utsav spilt onto the national highway, disrupting the flow of traffic.
Four-wheelers, in particular, found themselves glued to the celebration, with roads becoming impassable due to the influx of festival attendees and excess visitors.
An ambulance driver moving towards Khanapara said, "The sirens are of no use. I don't even have a free passage. I hope those who called for emergency help are being attended by some other driver."
While speaking to GPlus, a traffic official from Gorchuk Police Station said, "We are holding off the public using long ropes. There are more pedestrians than vehicles. The intersections are taken care of. But, the queue is too long. The event in a university nearby is another reason. We are trying our best."
It is to be mentioned that the construction of flyovers on the NH 27 is yet to be completed. Despite the broken roads, residents of Guwahati were sceptical about the decision of permitting such a festival near the vicinity of the nation highway.
