GUWAHATI: A collaborative legal aid clinic has been launched by law schools across the country for people excluded from the updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.
More than 19 lakh applicants were left out of the list that was published on August 31. Those who were left out have to file appeals within 120 days of receiving their rejection order from NRC authorities.
Based on a report by The Hindu, the legal aid clinic has been named ‘Parichay’ and will be based in Guwahati. It will act as a “clearing house of litigation and research assistance for lawyers filing appeals against exclusion from the NRC.”
There are several institutes that will be part of this legal aid initiative including Assam’s National Law University and Judicial Academy (NLUJA), Kolkata’s West Bengal National University of Juridical Science, Hyderabad’s National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR), Delhi’s National Law University and National Law University of Odisha.
Some other institutes are also in the process of finalising their collaboration with the clinic.
