Landslide Claims Life Of Mother & Son In Guwahati's Khanapara

GUWAHATI: A mother and her 5-year-old son lost their lives in a devastating landslide that occurred at 8 Mile, Khanapara, early morning of Friday, July 5. The landslide occurred following last night’s heavy rains that created havoc in the city and surrounding regions, causing floods and waterlogging.

The landslide happened early today after last night’s heavy rains which led to the unstable soil of the hilly area to give way, burying the victims under a massive heap of earth. The landslide has caused the earth to enter the room where the mother and her son were sleeping, filling the room and leaving no space for the duo to escape.

The mother, Rumi Das (32) and son, Champak Das (5), were found dead when dugged out from the mass of earth. The daughter, Janmoni Das (14) is currently undergoing treatment at a city hospital. She was dug out by the locals and recovered alive by them, and they had thereafter informed the police.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) recovered the bodies of Rumi and Champak, from under the debris by digging them out with shovels, as recounted by eyewitnesses.

A source from District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), while talking to GPlus, said, “The bodies were recovered from the landslide site in the morning today. The heavy rains from last night caused the earth to engulf the house and the victims got buried beneath it.”
