GUWAHATI: Justice V. Ramasubramanian, former Judge of the Supreme Court of India, assumed office as the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday, December 30,. Alongside him, Justice Vidyut Ranjan Sarangi took charge as a Member of the Commission. The occasion also saw the welcoming of Priyank Kanoongo, who had joined the NHRC as a Member the previous week. All three had been appointed by the President of India, Draupadi Murmu, on December 21.

Justice V. Ramasubramanian, born on June 30, 1958, in Mannargudi, Tamil Nadu, is a highly respected figure in India's legal landscape. He completed his B.Sc. in Chemistry from Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College in Chennai and went on to study law at the prestigious Madras Law College. After being enrolled as a member of the Bar in 1983, he practised law for 23 years at the Madras High Court. His judicial career began in 2006 when he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Madras High Court, becoming a permanent judge in 2009.
Justice Ramasubramanian's journey in the judiciary saw him transferred to the High Court of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh in 2016. After the bifurcation of the state, he continued his service in the Telangana High Court. In 2019, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, before ascending to the Supreme Court of India later that year. Over the course of his tenure, he authored 102 judgments, contributing significantly to landmark cases, including those related to the 2016 demonetisation policy and the legality of circumstantial evidence in bribery cases. He retired from the Supreme Court on June 29, 2023.
