GUWAHATI: India experienced its warmest year on record in 2024 since record-keeping began in 1901, according to a report from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The country’s annual mean temperature reached 25.75°C, surpassing the long-term average by 0.65°C. The average maximum temperature was 31.25°C, 0.20°C above normal, while the average minimum temperature was 20.24°C, exceeding the norm by 0.90°C.
This marks 2024 as India’s hottest year, overtaking 2016, which held the previous record with a mean temperature 0.54°C above normal.
Months including July, August, September, and October witnessed the highest recorded average minimum temperatures for those months, while February had the second-highest on record.
In Guwahati, May brought the city’s hottest day in over six decades, with temperatures soaring to 40.1°C, slightly below the all-time high of 40.3°C recorded in 1960. This was part of a regional heatwave exacerbated by an absence of rainfall.
Silchar and Itanagar also reported record temperatures over the past three years.
